How to maintain employee safety through online training

3 Jun 2020 | Lesson Desk Team1 min read

Since the national lockdown procedure has been implemented, South Africa has been experiencing the gradual phase of reopening the economy as thousands of businesses are reopening. However, having a more active economy means that not only essential workers will be at risk of contracting the COVID-19 virus, but an influx of other workers will also be at risk of exposure at one stage or another. Therefore, businesses have a vital role and responsibility to keep their employees safe when returning to their place of work.

Returning to work within this ‘new normal’ society entails that workers need to be informed on how the virus can be contracted, as well as be introduced to preventative measures in an aim to reduce the spread of the virus.

Some of the many preventative measures include businesses promoting personal hygiene practices, workers maintaining at least two meters apart from each other (also known as social distancing), businesses ensuring that there is alcohol-based hand sanitiser or soap and water available at all entrances and restrooms of the work premises, and the use of face masks at all times. However, businesses will find it difficult to directly train employees on these new protocols due to safety reasons and the overall need for social distancing. Therefore, employers need to move towards a more digital approach in order to quickly and effectively their staff.

Distance learning refers to a form of education and learning that requires little or no face-to-face interaction between the educator and learner. This is known to be the safest and most effective way to train and educate employees while allowing them to learn at their own pace while in the comfort of their own home.
